Which WMI codes does Rolls-Royce use?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists two WMIs for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars: SCA for passenger cars and SLA for multipurpose passenger vehicles (MPVs), the U.S. class that covers SUVs. SLA was added to vPIC in May 2019. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) lists SCA under Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd.

The SCA code is older than the current company. KBA's list also records it under Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd of Crewe, the pre-2003 business, alongside SCB, the code that now belongs to Bentley. The WMI code guide explains how codes stay with a manufacturer over time.
Do UK-market Rolls-Royce VINs follow U.S. rules?
Cars built for the U.S. must meet 49 CFR Part 565, which requires a check digit in position 9 and a model-year code in position 10. Cars built for Europe before July 2022, including those registered in Britain, came under rules that mirrored ISO 3779, which leaves positions 4 to 9 to the manufacturer and requires no check digit. The EU has required one for new vehicle types since 6 July 2022, but not a year code. An older Rolls-Royce first registered in Britain may therefore fail a U.S.-style check-digit test even though the VIN is genuine. The European VIN decoding guide has more on the differences.

Is a Rolls-Royce with an SCA VIN older or newer than one with SLA?
The WMI does not tell you the age. SCA is the passenger-car code and SLA the MPV code in NHTSA's vPIC database. Use the model-year code in position 10 for U.S.-market cars, or the registration document for others.
Will a UK-market Rolls-Royce decode fully here?
