Which WMI codes does Aston Martin use?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists two WMIs for Aston Martin Lagonda Limited. SCF is the long-standing code for its sports and GT cars. SD7 is registered for multipurpose passenger vehicles (MPVs), the U.S. class that covers SUVs; vPIC added it in September 2021.

Is an Aston Martin VIN a small-manufacturer VIN?
No, despite the brand's modest volumes. Under 49 CFR 565.15, a 9 in position 3 marks a six-character manufacturer identifier that continues in positions 12 to 14, a format used by low-volume makers. SCF and SD7 are ordinary three-character codes, so positions 12 to 14 of an Aston Martin VIN are not part of the manufacturer code. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) lists both codes under Aston Martin Lagonda of Gaydon.
Do UK-market Aston Martin VINs follow the same rules as U.S. ones?
Not necessarily. A car built for the U.S. must meet 49 CFR Part 565, which fixes a check digit in position 9 and a model-year code in position 10. Cars built to European rules before July 2022, including those registered in Britain, did not need a check digit: those rules mirrored ISO 3779, which leaves positions 4 to 9 to the manufacturer. The EU has required a check digit for new vehicle types since 6 July 2022 under Regulation 2021/535, but a model-year code is still optional. An older Aston Martin first registered in Britain or Europe may therefore fail a check-digit calculation even though its VIN is genuine.

Will a UK-registered Aston Martin decode fully?
Often not. Our decoder relies on NHTSA's vPIC data, which describes vehicles built for North America in detail. For a UK or European car the WMI will still identify Aston Martin Lagonda, but model and engine fields may come back empty.
