Ram VIN decoder
Ram is the Stellantis truck brand, sold in the US through FCA US LLC. It became a stand-alone brand in 2009, taking its name from the Dodge Ram pickup line, and today sells the Ram 1500, the 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups, chassis cabs and ProMaster vans. Stellantis itself was formed in January 2021 by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Groupe.

The Ram 1500 is built at Sterling Heights Assembly in Michigan, which reached its two-millionth truck in April 2025. The Heavy Duty pickups and chassis cabs come from Saltillo Truck Assembly in Coahuila, Mexico, and the ProMaster from the Saltillo van plant. FCA's 2027 VIN guide also lists a Saltillo Truck Extension plant for the Ram 1500, so a new 1500 can start with 1 or 3.
Every Ram from model year 1981 onward carries a 17-character VIN, but the make you see after decoding depends on age: trucks built before the brand split decode as Dodge, and later trucks decode as Ram. Current Stellantis WMIs are shared among brands, so the make and model sit in positions 5 to 7. For older trucks, see Dodge; for sister brands, see Jeep and Chrysler.
NHTSA’s files hold 194 vehicle recall campaigns and 20,184 owner complaints for Ram vehicles from model years 2007 to 2026, summarised here on 11 model pages. Ram 1500 has the most complaints (11,717), followed by Ram 2500 (5,114) and Ram 3500 (2,341). Of those complaints, 872 report a crash, 327 a fire, 417 at least one injury and 16 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

Which WMI codes appear on Ram VINs?
Ram trucks use shared Stellantis WMIs. In FCA's 2027 guide, 1C6 covers Ram 1500s built in Sterling Heights, 3C6 covers trucks built in Mexico and 3C7 covers incomplete vehicles such as chassis cabs from Saltillo. Older trucks sold under the Dodge make used Dodge-only codes; vPIC lists 1D7 and 3D7 as Dodge truck WMIs.

vPIC still names the Mexican WMIs under Chrysler de Mexico Toluca, while FCA's 2027 guide lists the manufacturer as FCA Mexico S.A. de C.V.; both refer to the same codes.
Which Ram plant codes appear in position 11?
In FCA's 2027 VIN code guide, position 4 is the restraint system, positions 5 to 7 give the brand, model, price series, drive and body or cab type, position 8 is the engine and position 11 the plant:

Position 9 is the check digit and position 10 the model year.
Why does my Ram decode as a Dodge?
Ram became a separate brand in 2009. Trucks built before the split were sold as the Dodge Ram and carry Dodge as the make in NHTSA's data, so they decode as Dodge. Later trucks decode as Ram.
Was my Ram 1500 built in Michigan or Mexico?
Check the first character and position 11. In FCA's 2027 guide, a 1500 starting with 1C6 and plant code N comes from Sterling Heights, Michigan, while one starting with 3C6 and plant code 4 comes from the Saltillo Truck Extension plant in Mexico.
