About Chevrolet VINs

That breadth means Chevrolets come from many plants, and the VIN records which one. The Corvette has been built in Bowling Green, Kentucky since 1981. The light-duty Silverado comes from Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana, Silao in Mexico and Oshawa in Canada, while the Silverado HD comes from Flint, Michigan and Oshawa. The Colorado and Express are built in Wentzville, Missouri, and the Trax and Trailblazer by GM Korea. GM has announced that the gas Equinox will move to Fairfax, Kansas in mid-2027 and the gas Blazer to Spring Hill, Tennessee in 2027.

Every Chevrolet from model year 1981 onward has a 17-character VIN. For vehicles built for the US and Canadian markets, NHTSA's vPIC database usually returns detailed results, including engine, body style and plant. Chevrolet shares GM's VIN system with GMC, Buick and Cadillac.

NHTSA’s files hold 751 vehicle recall campaigns and 170,244 owner complaints for Chevrolet vehicles from model years 1995 to 2027, summarised here on 172 model pages. The Malibu has the most complaints (19,326), followed by the Silverado 1500 (17,953) and the Impala (10,395). Of those complaints, 9,660 report a crash, 2,876 a fire, 6,087 at least one injury and 290 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

Which WMI codes start a Chevrolet VIN?

In GM's 2026 VIN standard, the third character of a Chevrolet WMI shows the vehicle type: 1 for a passenger car, C for a truck, N for an MPV, B for an incomplete vehicle and A for a bus. Chevrolets built by GM Korea use 7 for MPVs.

What do positions 4 to 8 mean on a Chevrolet VIN?

GM's Part 565 standard uses two layouts. On passenger cars such as the Corvette, position 4 is the vehicle line, 5 the series, 6 the body style, 7 the restraint system and 8 the engine. On trucks, SUVs and vans, position 4 combines GVWR, brake system and body style, 5 is the chassis (it reflects two- or four-wheel drive where both exist), 6 the series, 7 the restraint system and 8 the engine. Position 9 is the check digit and 10 the model year.

GM defines plant codes per country of build, so 1 means Wentzville on a VIN starting with 1 but Oshawa on one starting with 2. Read position 11 together with position 1.

How do I tell where my Silverado was built from its VIN?

Look at the first character and position 11. For model year 2026, GM's codes are Z for Fort Wayne Assembly (VIN starting with 1), 1 for Oshawa (VIN starting with 2) and G for Silao (VIN starting with 3). The Silverado HD uses F for Flint.

What does KL7 mean on a Chevrolet VIN?

KL7 is the WMI for Chevrolet MPVs built by GM Korea. In GM's 2026 standard it appears on the Trax (plant code C, Changwon) and the Trailblazer (plant code B, Bupyeong).
