Most Jeeps for North America are built in the US or Mexico. The Wrangler and Gladiator are both built in Toledo, Ohio; FCA's VIN guide lists Toledo North Assembly for the Wrangler and Toledo Supplier Park for the Gladiator. The Grand Cherokee is built at the Jefferson and Mack plants in Detroit, and the Grand Wagoneer at Warren Truck in Michigan. The Compass, Cherokee and Wagoneer S are built in Toluca, Mexico, and Stellantis plans to reopen its Belvidere, Illinois plant to build the Cherokee and Compass for the US from 2027.
Every Jeep from model year 1981 onward has a 17-character VIN. Current Stellantis WMIs are shared with Chrysler, Dodge and Ram, so the brand is encoded in positions 5 to 7, not in the first three characters. For sister brands, see Chrysler, Dodge and Ram.
NHTSA’s files hold 307 vehicle recall campaigns and 83,318 owner complaints for Jeep vehicles from model years 1995 to 2026, summarised here on 31 model pages. The Grand Cherokee has the most complaints (27,893), followed by the Wrangler (15,295) and the Cherokee (12,843). Of those complaints, 4,153 report a crash, 1,617 a fire, 2,665 at least one injury and 80 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.

Current Jeeps use shared Stellantis WMIs: 1C4 for US-built SUVs, 1C6 for the US-built Gladiator and 3C4 for SUVs built in Toluca. Older Jeeps used Jeep-only codes with J as the second character, such as 1J4 and 1J8.

Which Jeep plant codes appear in position 11?
FCA US files a VIN code guide with NHTSA for each model year. In the 2027 guide, position 4 is the restraint system, positions 5 to 7 give the brand, model, price series, drive position, drive type and body type, position 8 is the engine and position 11 the plant:

Why does my Jeep VIN start with 1C4 instead of a Jeep-specific code?
Recent Stellantis WMIs are shared across brands. NHTSA's vPIC lists 1C4 for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and other brands, and the Jeep brand and model are encoded in positions 5 to 7. Older Jeeps used Jeep-only WMIs such as 1J4 and 1J8.
Was my Grand Cherokee built at Jefferson or Mack?
Position 11 answers that. In FCA's 2027 VIN guide, C means Jefferson North Assembly and 8 means Mack Assembly, both in Detroit.
Can I check Jeep recalls with the decoder?

Does a Jeep VIN decode show off-road damage or accidents?
No. The VIN encodes factory data such as restraints, model, engine, model year and plant. Damage, title and ownership records come from state agencies and licensed history providers, which this site does not connect to.
