Ferrari VIN decoder
Ferrari is an Italian maker of sports cars, grand tourers and, since the Purosangue, one SUV. It has been an independent listed company since it separated from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on 3 January 2016; its shares trade in New York under the ticker RACE and on Euronext Milan. Exor, together with Piero Ferrari, has a controlling influence, according to Ferrari's 2025 annual report on Form 20-F.

Ferrari's production facilities are in Maranello and Modena in Italy. That fits the Z prefix, allocated to Italy, at the start of every Ferrari WMI in NHTSA's vPIC database.
The United States has long been one of Ferrari's main markets; Luigi Chinetti was for many years its exclusive importer there and opened the first U.S. Ferrari dealership. Which WMI codes does Ferrari use?
NHTSA's vPIC database lists three WMIs with the make Ferrari. ZFF is the main code of Ferrari S.p.A. for passenger cars. ZFD is listed under Ferrari North America, Inc. ZSG, added to vPIC in April 2023, is Ferrari S.p.A.'s only code in the multipurpose passenger vehicle (MPV) class, the U.S. category that covers SUVs.

Does Ferrari use a small-manufacturer VIN code?
No. Low-volume makers can be given a six-character identifier marked by a 9 in position 3, with the rest of the code in positions 12 to 14, as 49 CFR 565.15 describes; Lamborghini's ZA9 identifier is an example (see the Lamborghini VIN decoder). None of Ferrari's codes in vPIC has a 9 in position 3, so positions 12 to 14 of a Ferrari VIN are not part of the manufacturer code. Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) lists ZFF and one further code, ZDF, under Ferrari S.p.A. of Modena.
Why do some Ferrari VINs fail a check-digit test?
Ferraris delivered new in the U.S. must follow 49 CFR Part 565, which places a check digit in position 9 and a model-year code in position 10. Cars built for Europe before July 2022 came under rules that mirrored ISO 3779, which leaves positions 4 to 9 to the manufacturer and requires no check digit, so an older European-market Ferrari VIN may not validate under the U.S. formula even though it is authentic. The EU has required a check digit for new vehicle types since 6 July 2022, but a model-year code is still optional.
Because Ferraris often cross borders, knowing which standard a car was built to is useful before drawing conclusions from a failed check. The European VIN decoding guide walks through the differences.
Can I decode a Ferrari that was sold new in Europe?
You can enter it, but expect a partial result. Our decoder relies on NHTSA's vPIC data, which is most complete for vehicles built for North America. The WMI will identify Ferrari, while model and specification fields may be blank.

No. A VIN decode confirms the manufacturer and basic build information. Ownership, title, accident and provenance records are not part of this site.
