Honda VIN decoder
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese maker of cars, SUVs, pickups, minivans and motorcycles, and the parent of the Acura luxury brand. In the US its vehicles are sold by American Honda Motor Co., which also files Honda's VIN information with NHTSA. Honda and Nissan ended talks on a merger in February 2025.

Most Honda cars and light trucks sold in the US are built in North America. Honda's 2026 factbook lists the Accord at Marysville, Ohio; the CR-V at East Liberty, Ohio, Greensburg, Indiana and Alliston, Ontario; the Pilot, Passport, Odyssey and Ridgeline at Lincoln, Alabama; the Civic Hatchback at Greensburg; the Civic Sedan at Alliston; and the HR-V at Celaya, Mexico. The electric Prologue is an exception: General Motors builds it at Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Honda motorcycles for the US come from several countries, including Japan.
Every Honda from model year 1981 onward carries a 17-character VIN. For vehicles built for the US and Canadian markets, NHTSA's vPIC database usually decodes the model, trim, engine and plant. Honda's own filings with NHTSA show how the VIN is built, as summarized below.
NHTSA’s files hold 363 vehicle recall campaigns and 91,622 owner complaints for Honda vehicles from model years 1995 to 2027, summarised here on 127 model pages. The Accord has the most complaints (22,939), followed by the CR-V (15,939) and the Civic (15,375). Of those complaints, 5,803 report a crash, 887 a fire, 3,997 at least one injury and 102 at least one death; the figures count complaints, not people.
The World Manufacturer Identifier is the first three characters of the VIN. NHTSA’s vPIC database decodes 36 WMIs to Honda; this is the complete list, with the manufacturer name, country and vehicle type vPIC records for each.

Which WMI codes appear on Honda VINs?
Honda registers separate WMIs for each manufacturing company and vehicle type. The Prologue is the exception again: vPIC lists its WMI, 3GP, under General Motors LLC with the Honda make.

How is a Honda car VIN structured?
American Honda's filings describe the VIN as a WMI, a five-character model code in positions 4 to 8, the check digit in 9, the model year in 10, the plant in 11 and a six-digit serial. The model code identifies model, trim, drive, transmission and body; for example, the 2027 CR-V filing lists RS3H2 for a CR-V LX with two-wheel drive and a CVT.

Where was my Honda CR-V built?
Check the WMI and position 11. In Honda's 2027 CR-V filing, L means East Liberty, Ohio and E means Greensburg, Indiana (both with US WMIs such as 5J6 or 7FA), while H means Alliston, Ontario, with the Canadian WMI 2HK.
Why does a Honda Prologue VIN start with 3GP?
The Prologue is built by General Motors at Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Its VIN is defined in GM's VIN standard, which gives it WMI 3GP and plant code S, and vPIC lists 3GP under General Motors LLC with the Honda make.
