What NHTSA owner complaints mean

These figures count complaints that vehicle owners and other members of the public have submitted to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation. NHTSA uses complaints, together with other data, to spot safety issues that may warrant an investigation and to check whether existing recalls go far enough.

  • They are reports, not findings. Each complaint is the submitter's own account. Its presence in the database does not mean NHTSA has confirmed a defect.
  • Counts are not defect rates. The data doesn't say how many vehicles were sold, so a raw count can't tell you what share of vehicles had a problem.
  • Popular models collect more complaints. A model sold in large numbers will usually gather more complaints than a rare one, simply because more people own it.
  • One complaint can name several components. Totals by component can therefore add up to more than the number of complaints.
  • Coverage starts in 1995. NHTSA's complaint file contains complaints received since January 1, 1995.

Use complaint patterns as a prompt for questions: whether a recall covers the issue, whether the vehicle you are considering has had the fix, and what a mechanic finds on inspection. For confirmed safety defects, see the recall list for this model.

  1. NHTSA campaign 04V021000

    Reported

Power Train › Automatic Transmission › Lever and Linkage › Floor Shift

    Model year 1999

On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.

    Consequence:
Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
    Remedy:
Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. Owner notification began on June 14, 2004. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

    Reported

    Latches/Locks/Linkages › Hood › Latch

    Model year 2004

On certain passenger vehicles, an internal hood latch component may have been manufactured with a crack, which could propagate and break, allowing the primary/secondary latch spring to disengage.

    Consequence:
This could result in loss of both primary and secondary hood latch function, allowing the hood to open without warning. This could increase the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the latch assembly. Owner notification began on September 22, 2003. Owners should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-992-1997.

    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the recliner bolts. Owner notification began on April 23, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Vehicle description: certain passenger vehicles (non-sunroof only) fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201, "occupant protection in interior impact."

    Consequence:
In the event of a crash, there is a potential for injury if the occupant's head were to contact the b-pillar.
    Remedy:
Owners will be sent a storage bin accessory unit that can be attached to the b-pillar along with installation instructions. However, if an owner wishes, the dealer can perform the installation. Owner notification began December 17, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

  5. NHTSA campaign 00V366000

    Reported

    Child Seat

    Model years 2000–2001

Vehicle description: certain passenger vehicles, pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 225, "child restraint anchorage systems." Some of the owner's manuals for these vehicles are missing instructions that provide a step-by-step procedure, including diagrams, for properly attaching a child restraint system's tether strap to the tether anchorage.

    Consequence:
In the event of a crash, the child seat may not be properly attached increasing the risk of injury to the child.
    Remedy:

    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the shoulder belt height adjuster mounting bolts.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  7. NHTSA campaign 00V033000

    Reported

Seat Belts › Front › Retractor

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The molding flash on the primary lever may prevent the operation of the g-lock and tilt lock functions on some of the driver's side retractors.

    Consequence:
If this occurs in a frontal crash situation, driver protection from the seat belt may be reduced, increasing the risk of injury.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the left front retractor assemblies.

Filed by Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

  8. NHTSA campaign 99V343000

    Reported

    Air Bags › Frontal

    Model year 2000

Vehicle description: passenger and sport utility vehicles. The passenger air bag inflator assembly contains an incorrect inflator charge amount.

    Consequence:
This condition could increase the risk of a passenger occupant injury under certain accident conditions.
    Remedy:
Dealers will replace the air bag module with a correct module.

How to read this recall list

This list shows every safety recall campaign NHTSA has on file for this make, model and model year. It is not specific to one vehicle: a recall often covers only vehicles built in a certain date range or with a certain part, and many of the vehicles it covers will already have been repaired.

  • A single campaign often covers several models or model years, so the same campaign number can appear in more than one list.
